How old are you? 19? You do not need to know what you want to do with your life; hell I’d be worried if you did. Think of it this way – you go to college, do well, get your degree, and then you go play in “real life” and find some job that you can support yourself on or stay with your folks and build a nest egg (and ‘real life’ is not everything it’s cracked up to be, so for god’s sake don’t rush it!). Through trial & error, experience, luck, whatever you’ll come across something you like to do that translates into a job of some variety. For instance I only know of one person who ever “wanted” to be a librarian. Most of us ended up in library school but w/o thinking “ohhh….I wanna be a librarian…it’s been my dream ever since I was 5.”
There are 3 good ways to fuck up your life (experience talking).
1. Hope/think/want/expect that they’ll be someone there with you (when I was your age I KNEW by the time I was my current age, I’d married, 2 kids, house, etc.)
2. Get the hell out of Lynchburg. Yep, there are good things about Lynchburg, most notably your family. But if you don’t get out after college you probably never will. Go take a horrible sucky job and live with 5 people if you have to; just get out. You can always come back. 3. Shit I forget what
#3 is but when I remember I’ll let you know.
Thinking you should know what you want to be at your age is useless
(I know some people say they do, some people do, and most people & places (college) want you to make a decision NOW).
– words that turned my whole day around.
Astu Mengesha – stay down blaze up.
